50,000 free requests a month. No credit card. Commercial use allowed.
Geocodio and OpenGeocoding
| Topic | Geocodio | OpenGeocoding API |
|---|---|---|
| Coverage | The US, Canada and Mexico; the UK on Flex and Unlimited plans. | Worldwide: streets in 240+ countries and territories. House-number coverage varies by country. |
| Free usage | 2,500 lookups a day. No credit card until you go past them. | 50,000 requests a month at 2 requests/second. Commercial use allowed. No credit card. |
| Paid plans | Pay-as-you-go at $1 per 1,000 lookups after the free ones; Flex subscriptions with rollover credits from $325/month; Unlimited, a dedicated instance with no per-lookup fees, from $1,350/month. | Monthly allowances: $29 for 300,000 requests, $99 for 1,500,000. Dedicated capacity on Enterprise. |
| Request rate | 1,000 lookups a minute on pay-as-you-go. | 5 requests/second on Starter, 25 on Growth. |
| Storing results | Permanently in most cases; some UK and Australian results carry licence limits. | Permanently, with no deletion deadline, under the open data licences. |
| Bulk geocoding | A batch endpoint for up to 10,000 addresses per request, and spreadsheet or list jobs of millions of rows. | One query per request, up to your per-second limit. A short Python script geocodes a CSV. |
| Data appends | Census geographies, congressional and legislative districts, school districts, timezones, ZIP+4 and more, one extra credit each. | None. Results carry the structured address and coordinates. |
| Autocomplete | No autocomplete endpoint in its API documentation. | A dedicated endpoint that spends no credits; retrieving the chosen suggestion costs one. |
| Compliance | SOC 2 Type II and HIPAA business associate agreements on its Enterprise platform. | No HIPAA or SOC 2 attestation. |
What a month of geocoding costs
Geocodio pay-as-you-go at each of our plan allowances, using the free daily lookups every day of a 30-day month.
| Requests / month | Geocodio | OpenGeocoding |
|---|---|---|
| 50,000 | $0 | $0 Free |
| 300,000 | $225 | $29 Starter |
| 1,500,000 | $1,425 | $99 Growth |
Geocodio: USD pay-as-you-go list price, before data appends, which cost one more credit each. Flex subscriptions lower the rate for steady volume, and Unlimited removes per-lookup fees from $1,350/month. OpenGeocoding: monthly plan price excluding VAT or sales tax, which assumes you use the whole allowance.
When Geocodio fits better
Pick the right tool.
- You need census tracts, congressional or school districts, or ACS demographics with each address. Those appends are Geocodio's specialty, and we have nothing like them.
- Your work is batch-heavy: one request geocodes up to 10,000 addresses, and you can upload a spreadsheet instead of writing code.
- You need a HIPAA business associate agreement or a SOC 2 Type II report.
- You geocode around 1.5 million North American addresses a month or more: Unlimited gives a dedicated instance for a flat fee.
Accuracy
Our benchmark, and its limits.
| Queries | Geocodio | OpenGeocoding |
|---|---|---|
| US/Canada subset (1,945) | 89.4% | 97.0% |
Geocodio was measured only on US and Canadian addresses, and passed 38
of them that OpenGeocoding
0.18.0 failed. Its place answers mix city and ZIP centroids, so we credited
them at city level only, which may understate it. We ran this benchmark on our own corpus, whose
sources overlap our index: read it as a diagnostic, not a ranking, and test both services on your
own addresses.
Migrating
Swap the request, map the fields.
Geocodio takes GET query strings and returns a list of results; OpenGeocoding takes a JSON POST with an API key and returns the best match.
