Terms of service
Last updated: 19 October 2026
These terms govern your use of the OpenGeocoding API, dashboard and website (the “Service”), provided by [Company legal name], [Registered address] (“we”, “us”). By creating an account or using an API key you agree to them. If you use the Service for an organisation, you accept them on its behalf.
1. The Service
The Service turns addresses into coordinates and back, suggests addresses as they are typed, and returns administrative regions. Results are built from open data (see Data attributions) and may be incomplete or wrong. Check results before relying on them for anything safety-critical, such as emergency dispatch.
2. Accounts and API keys
You need an account to get API keys. Keep your keys secret: you are responsible for all use of your keys until you revoke them in the dashboard. Tell us at support@opengeocoding.com if you believe a key or your account has been compromised.
3. Plans, limits and payment
- Your account has a request rate and a balance of request credits, shared across its API keys and protocols. One successful API call consumes one credit: HTTP JSON 2xx or gRPC status 0. Errors do not consume credits. Completed replies are counted before network delivery; disconnecting during delivery does not restore credits for completed work.
- The free tier grants credits after email verification, with monthly periods measured from your signup date, not calendar months. Unused free credits expire at the end of their period and do not carry over. Credits are spent from the active grant that expires soonest. When none remain, the API refuses further requests until a new grant is available. There is no automatically billed overage.
- Self-service paid subscriptions and credit-pack purchases are not yet available. Any paid service requires a separate agreement covering prices, taxes, payment, renewal, cancellation and refunds. A separately signed agreement takes precedence over these terms where they differ.
4. Your use of results
We do not impose a contractual limit on caching, storing, modifying or reusing results, including permanently and in your own products. Your use remains subject to the underlying data licences, including applicable attribution and share-alike requirements; these terms do not override them. See Data attributions.
5. Acceptable use
You must not:
- break the law or infringe anyone’s rights through the Service;
- try to get around rate limits or quotas, for example by creating several free accounts;
- probe, scan or test the Service’s security, or disrupt it, without our written permission;
- resell or expose raw API access to third parties as a geocoding service of your own, unless an enterprise agreement allows it;
- send personal data in queries beyond the address you want geocoded.
We may suspend keys or accounts that break these rules, or that put the Service at risk, with notice where reasonably possible.
6. Availability and changes
We aim for high availability but, outside an enterprise agreement with an SLA, provide the Service without a guaranteed uptime. We may change or retire features; we will give at least 30 days’ notice before removing an API endpoint you use.
7. Warranty and liability
The Service and its results are provided “as is”, without warranties of any kind, to the extent the law allows. Our total liability for any claim relating to the Service is limited to the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim. We are not liable for indirect or consequential losses, lost profits or lost data. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law.
8. Termination
You can stop using the Service at any time and request account closure and deletion by emailing support@opengeocoding.com. There is currently no self-service account deletion. We handle deletion subject to applicable legal retention requirements; see our Privacy policy. We may terminate these terms for material breach that you don’t fix within 14 days of notice, or immediately for serious abuse.
9. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms. For material changes we will email account holders at least 30 days before they take effect. Continuing to use the Service after that means you accept them.
10. Law and disputes
These terms are governed by the laws of [Country of jurisdiction]. Courts there have exclusive jurisdiction, except where consumer protection law gives you the right to sue where you live.
