Google Maps API pricing, explained.
Google bills every API call as a billable event under a SKU, a priced product line. Each SKU has its own free monthly cap, then a price per 1,000 events that drops as monthly volume grows. Below: the SKUs behind geocoding, address autocomplete and maps, what they cost at real volumes, and how to keep the bill down. Prices are Google’s USD list prices, checked .
How the bill is calculated
- One SKU per kind of call. Forward and reverse geocoding share the Geocoding SKU. Autocomplete, Place Details, Address Validation and map loads each have their own.
- A free cap per SKU, every month. Most Essentials SKUs include 10,000 free events a month, Pro SKUs 5,000 and Enterprise SKUs 1,000. The old $200 monthly credit ended on 28 February 2025. A billing account is required even if you stay under the caps.
- Volume bands. Above the cap, each band of monthly volume is priced at its own rate, and volume counts across every project on the billing account.
- Discounts are negotiated. Above about 10,000,000 events a month on a paid SKU, Google may offer extra discounts through sales. Monthly Subscriptions are an alternative to pay-as-you-go.

What an address autocomplete form costs
On Places API (New), a session that ends with a Place Details Essentials call (the address and coordinates of the chosen suggestion) is billed for up to the first 12 autocomplete requests, plus the Place Details call. Sessions that request richer place fields don’t bill the autocomplete requests, but the closing call is billed at Google’s highest Place Details rate. Abandoned sessions bill each request. We assume 5 autocomplete requests for each address entered.

OpenGeocoding autocomplete requests spend no credits; retrieving the chosen address costs one, so each plan covers as many entered addresses as it has requests. Google: list prices for the Autocomplete Requests and Place Details Essentials SKUs, each after its own free cap.
Lowering a Google bill
Pay for fewer events.
- Use autocomplete session tokens, end each session with Place Details, and request only Essentials fields when you just need the address and coordinates.
- Debounce the input so a fast typist doesn’t send a request per keystroke.
- Keep place IDs: Google allows storing them indefinitely. Coordinates may be cached for up to 30 days.
- Set quotas and budget alerts in the Google Cloud console.
- At high volume, ask Google about Subscriptions or a negotiated discount.
When Google’s price is worth it
Pick the right tool.
- You need business details such as opening hours, ratings, phone numbers or photos. That is Google’s Places data, and open data doesn’t match it.
- Your app already shows a Google Map, Street View or Google directions.
- You need Google’s Address Validation for checkout or delivery forms.
OpenGeocoding

- 50,000 requests a month free, with no credit card. Paid plans from $29 a month, with no overage charges: calls stop at the allowance.
- Autocomplete spends no credits; retrieving the chosen address costs one.
- Store and reuse results without a time limit, subject to the open data licences, and show them on any map.
- Built on OpenStreetMap, Overture Maps, OpenAddresses and GeoNames. No business details such as opening hours or reviews.
